Gold Prices Surge Amid Economic Uncertainty and Growing Safe-Haven Demand Gold prices surged by more than 1% on Tuesday, driven by increasing concerns about global economic growth and the uncertainty surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies, particularly his tariff plans. These concerns prompted a notable shift toward gold as a safe-haven asset, which is traditionally sought after during periods of financial and geopolitical instability. As of 2:11 p.m. ET (1911 GMT), spot gold had advanced by 1.2%, reaching $2,932.79 per ounce. The metal had earlier touched a record high of $2,942.70 last week, reflecting mounting investor anxiety. In parallel, U.S. gold futures closed 1.7% higher, settling at $2,949. “Market participants are reacting to the unpredictable nature of the Trump administration’s trade strategies, which have generated heightened demand for gold as a hedge against economic turbulence,” said a senior market analyst at Kitco Metals. "Additionally, the technical chart for gold remains bullish, indicating potential for further upward momentum." Since taking office last month, President Trump has reshaped the global trade landscape with the introduction of a series of tariffs, which have disrupted established trading norms. There are ongoing plans for additional reciprocal tariffs targeting countries that impose duties on U.S. exports, further intensifying market apprehensions over trade conflicts. Analysts at Commerzbank have pointed to continued central bank purchasing of gold as an additional support factor for prices. Central banks, which have been net buyers of gold in recent years, are expected to maintain their purchasing activities as they seek to diversify reserves and hedge against currency volatility. The market’s focus has now shifted to the U.S. Federal Reserve's minutes from its January meeting, due for release on Wednesday. Investors are eager to gain insights into the central bank’s outlook for future interest rate moves, particularly amid concerns that the economic disruptions caused by tariffs could lead to a slowdown. “If the U.S. economy begins to show signs of weakness as a result of the ongoing trade disputes, there could be a shift toward lower interest rates, which would further support gold’s appeal,” the analyst added. Gold typically performs well in low-interest-rate environments, as it does not yield interest or dividends, making it a more attractive investment when traditional fixed-income assets become less appealing. However, market experts caution that while the broader trend for gold remains positive, the risk of a price pullback exists, particularly as gold prices approach historical highs. For gold to continue climbing, it may require additional geopolitical risks, such as an escalation of tensions in Ukraine or other global hotspots, to further drive investor demand. Fawad Razaqzada, a market analyst at City Index and FOREX.com, emphasized that “a deeper geopolitical crisis could propel gold to new highs, but at these elevated levels, there is also the potential for a correction if the current momentum weakens.” In addition to gold, other precious metals also experienced gains on Tuesday. Spot silver rose by 0.2%, reaching $32.84 per ounce, while platinum increased by 0.9%, settling at $983.75. Palladium, on the other hand, saw the most significant rise, climbing 2.5% to $986.50, driven by robust demand and supply constraints in the automotive sector, where palladium is a key component in catalytic converters.
