Gold holds just above US$4,000 on Tuesday as a stronger dollar and the Fed meeting keep traders cautious — Precious Metals Daily Update, October 27, 2026
Gold held just above the US$4,000 mark on Tuesday morning as a stronger US dollar and the start of the Federal Reserve meeting kept traders cautious after Monday’s recovery. Gold held around US$4,026.94 / C$5,648.74 per ounce, up 0.23 percent in US dollars and up 0.35 percent in Canadian dollars on the session. Silver held around US$54.00 / C$75.75 per ounce, up 0.06 percent in US dollars and up 0.21 percent in Canadian dollars, while platinum held around US$1,526.36 / C$2,140.91 per ounce, down 0.30 percent in US dollars and down 0.18 percent in Canadian dollars. In early global trade, spot gold had eased about 0.4 percent to near US$4,000.52 per ounce as the dollar rose about 0.3 percent to a near two-week high, before prices steadied into the North American morning.
The pressure is coming from rates and oil, not from a change in the metal story. Brent crude hovered near US$116 a barrel early on Tuesday on renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, then eased as Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials met Iranian leaders in Tehran in a bid to de-escalate tensions. High energy prices keep inflation concerns alive, and traders lifted the probability of a December Federal Reserve rate hike to about 82 percent, up from about 75 percent on Monday, while still expecting a hold this week. US durable goods orders also beat expectations on Tuesday, rising 1.8 percent in September against a consensus near 1.7 percent and a prior reading near flat, which supports the higher-for-longer case. Gold is therefore holding above US$4,000, but without conviction ahead of Wednesday’s decisions.
For investors: US$4,000 in gold remains the line that matters, and Tuesday’s hold above it is only a pause until the Federal Reserve speaks. A hawkish message on Wednesday, or a hot PCE inflation print on Thursday, could push gold back below US$4,000 and toward the US$3,900 area, while a Fed that leaves December open and softer inflation data could open a relief move higher. With the Bank of Canada at 9:45 AM ET and the Federal Reserve at 2:00 PM ET on Wednesday, October 28, staggered buying around confirmed levels is more disciplined than committing a full position ahead of the releases. Canadian-dollar investors should also watch the loonie, which traded near 1.40 per US dollar, because currency moves can lift or trim the Canadian-dollar price even when US dollar spot is steady.
For jewelers: Tuesday’s pricing is steady for gold and silver and slightly softer for platinum, which makes live quotes essential before Wednesday’s reset risk. Gold near C$5,648.74 per ounce and silver near C$75.75 keep replacement and scrap values elevated in Canadian dollars, while platinum near C$2,140.91 is a little cheaper than Monday’s close and can help on platinum work and restocking. That window may be short: prices can move quickly around the Wednesday rate decisions and Thursday’s US data. Confirming metal pricing early in the week, keeping trade and scrap buying aligned to live spot, and telling customers clearly that prices are set at the time of transaction helps protect margins through a volatile week for Gold Stock Corp customers.
Coming up — events that will move metals this week:
Tuesday, October 27, 10:00 AM ET — Conference Board consumer confidence for October (consensus 81.0, prior 81.9), with September new home sales the same morning: a soft confidence print can weigh on the US dollar and steady bullion as the Federal Reserve meeting begins, while firm data supports higher-for-longer rate expectations and pressures metals.
Wednesday, October 28, 9:45 AM ET — Bank of Canada rate decision (prior 2.25 percent; market pricing is split between a hold and a hike): either outcome can move the loonie directly, and therefore Canadian-dollar gold, silver, and platinum prices, even if US dollar spot is unchanged.
Wednesday, October 28, 2:00 PM ET — Federal Reserve rate decision, with the press conference at 2:30 PM ET (consensus hold at 3.75 to 4.00 percent, prior 3.75 to 4.00 percent; December hike odds near 82 percent): the statement and press conference tone on oil-led inflation and December tightening will set yields and the US dollar, the two biggest near-term drivers for bullion. Alphabet and Microsoft earnings after the close can also shift broader risk sentiment.
Thursday, October 29, 8:30 AM ET — US advance Q3 GDP and September PCE price index (GDP consensus 3.1 percent annualized, prior Q2 growth 2.2 percent; PCE consensus headline 0.5 percent month over month and core 3.1 percent year over year, prior core 3.0 percent): hot inflation with firm growth the day after the Fed decision would reinforce December hike expectations and pressure metals, while softer data would challenge that pricing.
Friday, October 30, 8:30 AM ET — US employment cost index for Q3 (consensus 0.8 percent, prior 0.9 percent), with the Bank of Japan decision the same day and the European Central Bank decision on Thursday: wage inflation that stays firm keeps rate pressure on metals into the weekend, while a softer print can ease yields and support a steadier close.
